Things to Keep in Mind:
Choosing a taxidermist can be a hard decision, however it doesn’t need to be an overwhelming task. Taxidermy is an art that requires a high level of skill and professionalism. You absolutely want someone that pays attention to details. There are several aspects that you should consider when choosing your taxidermist.
Licensed Taxidermist: North Carolina requires that a taxidermist be licensed to operate and perform taxidermy. For migratory waterfowl, the taxidermist must be federally licensed. Make sure that the person that performs the work on your trophy is licensed and credible. Here at “Ernie’s Taxidermy”, I am fully licensed.
Quality of Work: Look at the completed work, paying attention to detail. Are the mounts anatomically correct? Does the mount look real? It is also a good idea to contact the taxidermist and stop by to see the shop to see some things that are currently being worked on, to get a first-hand experience for the craftsmanship.
Completion Time: Ask the taxidermist how long, on average, your project will take time to complete? 3 to 6 months is the standard time for most projects. If the estimate is a short frame of time then the taxidermist might not give attention to detail. A longer period indicates that the taxidermist is working on many projects and is a sought after professional.
